DALLAS, TX–“Whenever there is time on the clock in a one-score game I feel kind of confident that we are capable,” Pittsburgh Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin assured reporters during the post-game press conference. Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is well-acquainted with last minute heroics; he successfully guided his team to victory in an eerily similar scenario in Super Bowl XLIII. With 2:37 on the clock he drove the Steelers 78 yards, hitting former Steelers wideout Santonio Holmes in the corner for a six-yard touchdown in the dramatic Steelers victory.

“You feel pretty good…you like your chances,” said Roethlisberger entering yesterday’s final huddle. The taste of my first Super Bowl week was like being in high school and finally arriving on college campus. The number of people was overwhelming, so much so that 2011 Miss America, Teresa Scanlan, stood next to me several times on ‘Radio Row’ and I just assumed it was another pretty face that decided to wear a tiara. I dropped the ball on that one, but I can be forgiven—I’m a Super Bowl media rookie. I’m no John Clayton, who’s attended 35 of these things. Oh yeah, you might be wondering what ‘Radio Row’ is: it’s a collection of radio and television stations centrally located in a convention room setting. This year’s media headquarters was at the Sheraton Dallas.

According to the PR department of the New Orleans Saints there is no truth to the Super Bowl Sunday rumor that New Orleans Saints current head coach Sean Payton is on the verge of leaving the club to join the Dallas Cowboys.  During this afternoon and early evening there was rampant speculation and word-of-mouth rumors coming from both people attending the Super Bowl, which coincidently was being held at the Dallas Cowboys brand new stadium, that Payton was on the verge of joining the Cowboys in some capacity. It became such a fast-brewing storm around the Saints complex and local area media that the Saints PR department came out this evening with a brief statement commenting on the situation.

TEXAS V. NATION: Winners/Losers- Pt. II

NATION WINNERS

Damien Berry (RB-Miami): The electrifying back was sensational on his 72-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Berry bounced the run outside and burned the entire defense on his way to the end zone. Neither Brian Duncan nor Chris Prosinski could lay a hand on him, as the former Hurricane sped by them. Berry didn’t get many carries in Saturday’s game, but he consistently showed excellent burst and acceleration during practices earlier in the week. The agile runner can change directions on a dime.

Derrell Johnson-Koulianos (WR-Iowa): It was actually kind of sad watching DJK out there running around with a Utah logo on his helmet, but that didn’t him stop from turning heads. Koulianos came alive in the fourth quarter, showing his quickness in and out of his routes on a five-yard

TEXAS V. NATION: Winners/Losers Pt. I

The fifth annual NFL PA Texas vs. the Nation game didn’t exactly feature a who’s who of NFL prospects, but it did showcase a collection of talented athletes both at the skill positions and in the trenches who could be difference makers at the next level.

TEXAS WINNERS

Taylor Potts (QB-TX. Tech): The former Red Raider was the best among a rather unimpressive lot of quarterbacks. Potts got the party started early by applying good touch on a 28-yard touchdown pass to Denarius Moore. The 6’4” signal caller led his receiver by putting enough air under the throw to allow Moore to run underneath the football before hauling it in.

Potts also demonstrated the ability to step away from pressure and make off-balanced throws, such as his short delivery to tight end

Standing at the podium while addressing the media, NFL Commissioner Rodger Goodell stated, “At least until next year, this was the most watched season in the history of the NFL.” That may be wishful thinking on his part, as most of the close to 49 minutes of taking questions from the media revolved around the Collective Bargaining Agreement that expires on March 4th. In a time where the economy is struggling the NFL seems to be making money hand over fist, leaving the question are both sides going to kill the ‘Golden Goose’ or will they manage to avoid a work stoppage, something which the NFL hasn’t seen since league owners put replacements players on the field for $1,000 per game back in 1987.

“I do. I do believe that DeMaurice Smith (NFLPA President) understands that after March 4th, it becomes more difficult to reach an agreement,”

The Syracuse Orange made it back to the bowls this season and senior MIKE Derrell Smith was a critical component to their resurgent season. The Big East man led the Orange in tackles (114), forced fumbles (three) and fumble recoveries (three) while tacking on nine tackles for loss as a senior. Not just a star on the field, the All-Big East performer was a regular member on the Syracuse Honor Roll and the Big East’s All-Academic teams. The hard-working linebacker is one semester away from completing his Masters Degree in Advertising.
