Big Ten: Week 3 Review

CFI Week in Review | CFI Medical Report

Comments from the week’s action around the Big Ten.

We were one drive (Michigan), one gutsy play (Michigan State) and one extra point (Wisconsin) away from September 18th, 2010 deconstructing the retooling of the mighty conference’s reputation.

Under the constraints of space, time (where’s my DeLorean?) and lack of energy due to my new baby boy, I would like to offer a few observations in the order of our previous CFI rankings:

#3 Iowa proves us wrong in loss to #25 Arizona. The Monday morning pontificators can now harass us for our seemingly inflated ranking of the Hawkeyes after their disappointing late night let down against the Wildcats.

Insider: Dustin Keller vs JerMichael Finley

On the outside looking in it would make a lot of sense to think that JerMichael Finley the Green Bay tight end and fantasy football darling for 2010 would be overwhelming favorite over the New York Jets tight end Dustin Keller and their smash mouth type style of offense compared the high powered passing attack of Green Bay.

Not so fast on Finley becoming the star tight end of 2010 a point needs to be made about Dustin Keller what the season holds for this former first round pick out of Purdue in 2008.

The overwhelming choice Finley was chosen by media outlets to be the star of 2010 from the tight end position and with what we know it would be hard to argue but once you find out what you don’t know there might be a change of heart.

CFI Medical Report: Week 3

College Football Insiders founder Daniel Mogollon takes a look back at the week that was in college football.

Team of the Week: Arizona Wildcats

The bottom line in one of the wackiest games on Saturday—two interception returns for touchdowns, a 100-yard kick return, a blocked punt and a muffed punt which both set up scores—is that the Arizona Wildcats may have come up with their biggest win in the Mike Stoops era, knocking off a top-ten Big Ten team in Iowa. Making it even more intriguing is the fact the Hawkeyes just happen to be the alma mater of coach Stoops. The Wildcats built a 27-7 lead, only to see Iowa

Case Keenum Out For Year | May Seek Waiver

Head coach Kevin Sumlin said Sunday night that Case Keenum (torn anterior cruciate ligament in the right knee) will miss the rest of the season. Keenum, a fifth-year senior from Abilene who is fifth on the NCAA career passing yardage list (13,586), blew out his knee trying to tackle UCLA linebacker Akeem Ayers after a second-quarter interception One option for UH - one that can’t pay any dividends this season is for Keenum to appeal for a sixth year of eligibility. According to the waiver criteria laid out in 14.2.1.5.1 of the NCAA Division I Manual, an appeal could be a long-shot winner. A waiver of the five-year period of eligibility is designed to provide a student-athlete with the opportunity to participate in four seasons of intercollegiate competition within a five-year period. This waiver may be granted, based upon objective evidence, for reasons that are beyond

Hawaii’s Kealoha Pilares Generates NFL Buzz

Kealoha Pilares had an impressive performance six catches for 117 yards and a touchdown. NFL scouts attending yesterday’s game said Pilares, the starting right slotback, has generated a buzz. Pilares gained notice when he had two long scoring plays in the fourth quarter against Southern California. Pilares has been praised for his first-step quickness, sure hands and what is regarded as “miss-ability.” UH associate head coach Rich Miano, who serves as the Warriors’ pro liaison, has been told Pilares projects as an inside receiver. “I think NFL teams are going more to three wide receivers,” Miano said. “Wes Welker. Davone Bess. Kealoha is that type of player. I think the (NFL) schemes fit what he does.” In team testing the past spring, he power-cleaned 356 pounds, a team best. His next goal is to improve his speed. “I think I still don’t know how to run,” he
