NEBRASKA-OKLAHOMA: SCOUT’S NOTEBOOK

In a farewell to a classic rivalry, Oklahoma fought back from an early deficit to gain the 23-20 edge over Nebraska, which departs for the Big Ten in 2011. The fact that standout freshman Taylor Martinez was hobbled by multiple injuries deprived the Cornhuskers of their big-play dimension needed to keep pace with a loaded and more balanced Sooner attack.

Landry finishes strong

Sophomore Landry Jones didn’t pitch a perfect game, but he progressively improved as the game wore on and made a number of on-the-money throws in traffic.

Early on, however, Jones was a bit off on his passes, particularly on a couple of short screens that had too much arc of them in the first quarter. One of those hangers slowed down wide receiver Ryan Broyles and limited him to a 4-yard play.

NEW YORK, NY – The William V. Campbell trophy is known as the academic Heisman Trophy, so who better to go to than the finalists for the William V. Campbell Trophy to find out who should win the Heisman? CFI’s Daniel Mogollon and Lloyd Ribner III were able to speak with several of college football’s top players and best students earlier this week at an event hosted by the National Football Foundation.

“I think Cam Newton is the clear favorite. The guy is a freak. The things he’s done on the field are pretty ridiculous. Just watch him every Saturday…unbelievable player.”

College Football Insiders Staff Breakdown: All 20 members of the College Football Insiders staff voted Cam Newton as their Heisman Trophy pick. Newton was the only player on all 20 ballots. Oregon’s LaMichael James edged Andrew Luck of Stanford for second place with 11 second-place votes, the most of any candidate. Luck had the second most second-place votes and led with eight third-place votes. The Stanford man was actually on more ballots than James (17 to 16). Oklahoma State’s Justin Blackmon was the only other player to receive more than one vote. Boise State’s Kellen Moore, who is invited to New York, received a single third-place vote, as did fellow quarterbacks Ryan Mallett and Denard Robinson, as well as defenders Nick Fairley and Da’Quan Bowers. Auburn was the only team with two players to receive a vote.

On the gridiron, Ponder led FSU to the ACC Championship Game appearance, throwing for 2,038 yards with 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions despite playing through injuries.
