Scout’s Notebook: Arizona-Oklahoma State (Valero Alamo Bowl)

For a second consecutive year Arizona dropped the ball in postseason action, getting outclassed 36-10 by Oklahoma State. The Cowboys’ quick pace and talent at the skill positions made them too much to handle for Mike Stoops and company.

Blackmon leaves defenders in the dust

Wide receiver Justin Blackmon put on a show, exhibiting his full repertoire of skills on the grand stage with nine catches for 117 yards and two scores. His stat line could have easily been more prodigious had he held on to a pair of catchable balls that were dropped.

The well-built 6’1”, 207 pound thoroughbred got the party started early by plucking the ball out of the air cleanly on a seven-yard hook-up that forced his man, Robert Golden, to make a heads-up tackle in space before Blackmon erupted for a long gainer.

Chick-Fil-A Bowl: South Carolina vs. FSU

Atlanta, GA Georgia Dome 12.31.10 7:30 pm EST ESPN
Play-By-Play: Ron Franklin; Analyst: Ed Cunningham

The headline game of New Year’s Eve features a pair of teams coming off conference championship game defeats and the renewal of an old rivalry. South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier will take on the Florida State Seminoles for the first time since 2001, but this time Bobby Bowden is not wandering the opposing sidelines, Jimbo Fisher is. Both teams suffered through inconsistencies with their quarterbacks throughout the season and the signal callers’ play will be an important factor in the game’s outcome. South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia threw multiple interceptions in three of the four Gamecock losses but can look great at times. His favorite target, sophomore Alshon Jeffrey, can dominate cornerbacks at any given time and freshman running back Marcus Lattimore is a magnet for

Player Spotlight: QB Christian Ponder, FSU

The Florida State quarterback has seen parts of his junior and senior seasons plagued by injuries, but if Ponder has a say he will be ready to take on the Gamecocks to close out the year. “I just wanted to get back on the field,” was Ponder’s initial response when we asked what goals he had for 2010. The last time he took the field was against the Gators in what he described as, “Awesome…an unbelievable night. Probably the best game atmosphere I’ve been a part of since being at Florida State…probably the best memory I’ll have at Florida State.” If the heady signal caller can take the field one more time it would certainly help FSU’s chances for victory and provide him another chance at more lasting memories.

Autozone Liberty Bowl: Georgia vs. UCF

Memphis, TN Liberty Bowl 12.31.10 3:30 pm EST ESPN

Georgia is a perennial bowl power, making their 14th consecutive bowl appearance, while Central Florida is making their second Liberty Bowl appearance in the last four seasons. Georgia is 26-13-3 all-time in bowl games and an impressive 7-2 under embattled head coach Mark Richt. Even with all of their past success, the Bulldogs are looking to avoid their first losing season in 14 years. Meanwhile, UCF is still looking for its first ever bowl win, having lost in all three previous attempts. It is a tale of a storied program that struggled mightily in the SEC this year against the up-and-coming Conference USA champion UCF squad. The Knights give up a meager 110 yards per game on the ground, so instead they will have to contain one of the best,

Player Spotlight: CB Brandon Harris, Miami

The latest coming from Miami’s stellar cover man is that he will be back in South Beach in 2011, but the junior has also conceded that if he believes he will be a first round pick it will be tough to turn down the NFL riches. How he fares against Notre Dame, particularly when matched up with stud receiver Michael Floyd—another junior with a decision to make—could play a large role in where Harris is playing in 2011. Despite his numbers dipping across the board from his sensational sophomore season, Harris was still good enough to earn second team All-ACC honors for his play in 2010. This Hurricane is a well-rounded defensive back who can mirror receivers in coverage and contribute in run support.
