Tennessee Vols Add Elite Punter

Tennessee head coach Derek Dooley announced Wednesday that Bakersfield, Calif., punter Matt Darr has signed scholarship papers to play for the Vols this season.

Darr, considered to be the No.1-rated high school punter in the nation last season, plans to enroll this summer in time for second semester classes.

The 6-2, 215-pounder played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl and was selected to the MaxPreps All-America first team. Darr averaged 42.9 yards per punt with a career long of 71 for Frontier High School, which finished 11-2 during his senior campaign. Darr turned in 96 tackles, a team-high 79 solo, from his linebacker position. As a junior, he averaged 46.3 yards per punt with 93 tackles.

Darr also excelled in track and field, leading Frontier to the team 2009 state championship with individual titles in the shot put (62-1.25) and discus (192-0).

Penn State and Syracuse To Continue Rivalry

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa., June 30, 2010 – A traditional college football rivalry will resume in 2013 when Penn State and Syracuse will clash at the New Meadowlands Stadium.

Penn State Director of Athletics Tim Curley, Syracuse Director of Athletics Dr. Daryl Gross and CEO of New Meadowlands Stadium Company Mark Lamping announced today that the New Meadowlands Stadium will host the Nittany Lions and Orange on August 31, 2013 in the first of a three-game series.

The long-time rivals also are working to finalize an agreement to play in 2020 and 2021. Syracuse will play at Beaver Stadium on September 19, 2020 and the Nittany Lions will visit the Orange on September 18, 2021.

Kellen Moore Wins Joe Kearney Award

DENVER – Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore and Hawai‘i multi-sport athlete Amber Kaufman are the 2009-10 Western Athletic Conference Joe Kearney Award winners. Moore is the first Boise State football player to win the award, while Kaufman is the third female multi-sport athlete to win the award and the second from the University of Hawai‘i.<br
Named in honor of former WAC commissioner Joe Kearney, the awards are given annually to the top male and female student-athletes in the WAC.  Kearney, who passed away earlier last month at the age of 83, was the commissioner of the WAC from 1980-94.<br
Moore played high school football in Prosser, Wash., just 15 miles from Sunnyside, Wash., where Kearney was a three-sport coach for three years (1954-57).  As a sophomore last fall, Moore was the 2009 WAC Offensive Player of the Year after he led the Broncos to a perfect

Etienne Joins CMU Football Program

MOUNT PLEASANT – Central Michigan head football coach Dan Enos has announced the addition of defensive lineman Odino Etienne to the Chippewas’ roster.

Etienne is a transfer from El Camino (Calif.) Community College. He is currently enrolled in summer classes at CMU and has two years of eligibility remaining.

“Odino is a guy that provides us depth and experience at the defensive tackle position,” Enos said. “He is well-developed physically, mature and is a good athlete with toughness. We feel his best football is still ahead of him.”

Etienne played two seasons at El Camino, helping lead the Warriors to records of 9-1 in 2008 and 10-2 in 2009.

CFL Kicks Off Tonight | Names To Know

The season gets underway with a Grey Cup replay with the defending Canadian league champion Montreal Alouettes playing the Roughriders in Saskatchewan at 7 PM ET this evening. Later, Toronto will be in Calgary to play the Stampeders at 10 PM ET. Then on Friday, Hamilton will be in Winnipeg at 8 PM ET, while BC plays at Edmonton on Sunday at 7 PM ET. The CFL season wraps up with the 109th edition of the Grey Cup on November 28th in Edmonton. Bring your woolies!!! CFL rosters are split roughly evenly between Canadian and American-born players and while its not the NFL there are still plenty of names dotting CFL rosters that will be familiar to either U.S. college or draft followers. Update On Ryan Mallett Foot Injury

Arkansas QB Ryan Mallett, who had a screw replaced in his foot on June 9, is expected to begin throwing again this week.  The injury has had one positive effect, he’s shortened his stride.  “I shortened my stride up a little bit, and I’ve been putting the ball everywhere I want to,” Mallett told Rivals.com. “In the past, I might not have put it in the exact spot I want. Even with my foot, I’m putting it in the exact spot I want.”
