Vandy Coach Hangs’em Up…Unexpectedly

Nashville’s WSMV-TV reports that Vanderbilt’s ninth-year head coach Bobby Johnson has “abruptly” retired. After leading the Commodores to a 7-6 record in 2008, the program fell on hard times with a two-win season the following year. While the 59-year-old was only 29-66 during his tenure, it should be noted that Johnson did guide Vandy to its first non-losing season two years ago since 1982. Previously, the South Carolina native also served as the defensive coordinator of Clemson University in 2003.

Q&A: Michael Oher, Baltimore Ravens

The NFL Draft Bible catches up with offensive tackle Michael Oher of the Baltimore Ravens at Ray Rice Day in New York.

What was the most difficult thing to master at the next level?

Everybody is good in the NFL. In college you’re probably not going to have the same amount of talent on the field, so every play and every snap matters in the NFL because of the amount of talent and amount of experience.  It’s just adjusting to stuff like that and getting used to the speed of the game and the amount of work that it takes to prepare for a game.

What are some of the things you are trying to improve upon in your second year?

Just trying to get another playbook

Marve Sets Sights on Sept 4, Notre Dame

After it was announced earlier in the week that he will be the starter entering the upcoming team camp, Robert Marve, Purdue’s junior quarterback, is excited to get on the field and make some plays, “Sitting out for a year really made me hungry for this upcoming season. I’ve been looking forward to this season since last spring and I’m really looking forward to getting on the field September 4th.”

Marve, a 2009 transfer from Miami University, sat out last season while rehabbing an ACL injury. He notes that sitting out for a year really puts life into perspective, “It really humbles you because you don’t realize what you have until you lose it. Jags Strike Gold with Deji Karim

Jaguars.com indicates that rookie Deji Karim could be used in a reserve role to spell Maurice Jones Drew in the upcoming season.

Mancini’s Take: So far, Karim looks like a sixth-round steal. He quite simply mesmerized teammates with his quick, cutting moves that faked linebackers out of their jock straps in OTAs. So, how does this type of talent fall through the cracks? A devastating knee injury that required a long time to heal in his junior year took him off of many people’s radar. But those who watched him during his pro day not only took notice of his 4.37 speed, but also had to marvel at his 4.05 20-yard shuttle and his 6.67-second mark in the three-cone drill. The three-cone drill is perhaps the best indicator of how good a running back can be at the next level. There’s no doubt that the Jags have to find a
